According to a ten-point order issued by R G Jadhav, universities in the state have been asked to disaffiliate college which are functioning with lecturers and professors who have not yet cleared the NET/SET
The state government’s ultimatum to universities across the state to make all their professors to clear their National or The state government’s ultimatum to universities across the state to make all their professors to clear their National or State Eligibility Test(NET/SET) drew a mixed response from principals of various colleges.
While most of them supported the step, some said that fixing a particular date, that of December 31,2011,for clearing the exam might not work out.
According to a ten-point order issued by R G Jadhav, universities in the state have been asked to disaffiliate colleges which are functioning with lecturers and professors who have not yet cleared the NET/SET. However, the teachers have also been given the option of attempting four times for the exam.
The University of Pune (UoP) has been acting as a co-ordinating agency for the 12 universities in Maharashtra and one in Goa. “We have been given the responsibility by the government to see to it that the teachers who have not yet cleared their NET/SET,which is the minimum qualification for them to become lecturers or professors, clear them by December 31,2011. To ensure that this happens, the UoP will be putting up training centres and organising coaching classes and workshops to assist the teachers. We will be getting experts on various subjects to come and train the teachers,” said W N Gade, director of Board of College and University Development (BCUD),UoP.
Supporting the Government’s move,Ravindrasingh Pardeshi, principal,Fergusson college said,“These are guidelines by the UGC and the NET/SET is the minimum requirement for lectureship. The deadline for the exams have also been postponed once or twice. Since this is a prerequisite qualification,I think it is a must for teachers to clear the exam.”
Echoing his view,Mukund Sarda,Dean,New Law College,Bharati Vidyapeeth University said,“I fully support the government’s move. If the teachers are being payed according to the 6 th Pay Commission today,it should also be ensured that they are fully qualified.” “Moreover, being teachers there is a constant need to upgrading your knowledge. Also, even if a few teachers might find it difficult to clear the test, they are also being given four attempts so I do not see a problem. Only, the university’s decision to train the teachers should be followed effectively,” he added.
However, even if supporting the decision,Rajendra Zunjarrao, principal,Modern College of Arts,Science and Commerce,Shivajinagar called for some flexibility in the process. “More than testing the knowledge of the teachers,I think it is more important to test the skills of teachers. Also, the teachers of life sciences have to clear the tests of all the subjects,be it botany, zoology or microbiology, even if his area of expertise is only one of those subjects. I think that should be changed for the benefit of the teachers,” said Zunjarrao. Chairman of Azam campus,P A Inamdar said,“Setting a fixed date for clearing the exams might not work out. The University’s move to train teachers is a welcome move but I think the teachers should be given some more time instead of setting a deadline for the test.”
